Why pigment-based methods are harder on deeper skin tones
Pigment-targeting energy — laser and IPL — can be absorbed by skin melanin as well as hair melanin. That's why deeper skin tones have historically faced higher risk of irritation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and why some clients are told they aren't candidates for pigment-based methods. Modern devices and skilled providers have made real progress, but the underlying physics remain the same.
Why electrolysis is different by design
Electrolysis doesn't use light. It doesn't rely on contrast. It delivers a precise current inside the follicle itself, and the mechanism is unrelated to skin pigment. - Is electrolysis safe for Black skin?
- Yes — completely. Because electrolysis never targets pigment, the mechanism is identical across every Fitzpatrick skin tone. It's a safe, permanent option for melanin-rich skin.
- Will it cause dark spots?
- Electrolysis doesn't cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation the way pigment-based light energy can, because it doesn't deliver light energy at all. Mild redness for 24–48 hours is normal; conservative settings and proper aftercare keep skin calm.
- Can it stop ingrown hairs permanently?
- Yes. When a follicle is eliminated, it can no longer produce a hair that curves back into the skin. Electrolysis ends the ingrown cycle at its source.
- I was told I'm not a candidate for laser — can you help?
- Almost certainly yes. Being told you aren't a candidate for pigment-based methods says nothing about your candidacy for electrolysis, which works on every skin tone and every hair color.
